When my wife asked me if I wanted to go to the camp and fish while she prepared the trailer for the coming season I said what any avid fisherman would say, “Is this some type of trick?”  She replied with laughter and that she had some stuff she could do up there plus the trailer has heat, tv, and a couch to occupy her time.  So we loaded up the charger and went to….looking for something catchy…..nothing……..elkins.

The water in and around shavers fork has been terrible for that last 2-3 weeks with all the snow melt off and rain.  So this day being thursday, water levels finally at normal for the 2nd straight day in 2-3 weeks, recent stockings, cloudy skies, and temps in the 20’s, it should be a good day on the water.  100_0269.jpg picture by Bentrod2010

IT WAS!!!  3 hours  of trout fishing paradise.  Only a few people on the stream and they were either fishing from the bridge, climbing down the pillars of the bridge, or fishing from high up on the banks.  Didn’t see another person actually fishing from the water.

Water was pretty cold, probably mid to high 40’s maybe low 50’s, perfectly cold.  You could see just a slight greenish tint to the water but not bad.  Good flows, overcast skies, 27 degree air temps…..perfect as long as you didn’t go swimming.

The fishing started off fast and ended even faster as my 3 hr time limit came quickly.  I ended up landing 9 of 13 hooked, the first 3 on a gold ribbed hares ear.  Then the next 4 on a white wooldy bugger and the last 2 on a orange squirmy wormy.  Nothing with any size, all in the 12-16 inch range.  Brook and Rainbow trout.   I did manage to turn a few better sized fish way down deep slow stipping a white wooly.   I”ll see you stockies again SUNDAY!!! (hopefully)

David Grossman love power bait. I have personally watched him tie power bait on, on the Watauga….

first off learn to use the correct tense of a verb you caveman it’s, “David Grossman Loves Powerbait.” Secondly, you are the one who grew up chucking bait not me. If i remember the story you used to enjoy chucking live bait on brook trout streams and then eating your catch. Congratulations….you ate our heritage.

I’m pretty sure 99.9% of the fly fishing population began by chucking power bait, corn, or some type of egg.
